The second edition of the New Stages project

New Stages is the second edition of the project organized by them Goethe-Institut Kroatien , Union of Screenwriters and Playwrights, KunstTeatar and Croatian Center ITI. The project is focused on development of new dramatic texts authors of the younger generation, their active positioning on the theater and literary scene, contextualization of contemporary dramatic literature, and problematization of the position of contemporary playwrights in Croatia.
The project will take place in two phases . During 2023 The Union of Screenwriters and Writers of Performing Works in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Kroatien is announcing a competition for participation in the program for the development of dramatic texts. In the competition, three authors will be selected who, during the duration of the program, which will be held both live and online, will have the opportunity to develop their new or existing drama under the mentorship of prominent Croatian playwright Ivor Martinić . and at the intensive workshop with playwrights Ivana Vuković and Lucia Klarić, participants of the first edition of the New Stages project. Participation in the program is rewarded with a scholarship in the total amount of 1100 euros gross . At the end of the program, the selected authors will submit the first version of the dramatic text, and the final versions of the texts, which they will have the opportunity to work on after the end of the program, will be published in the magazine Kazalište in cooperation with Croatian ITI center. As part of the project, a round table will be organized “How much does one dramatic text cost?”.
Activities in the second phase of the project during 2024 . include staged readings of completed dramatic texts in cooperation with KunstTeatra . The readings will be open to the public. The details will be coordinated with participants and partners, and published at the end of 2023. years.
COMPETITION:
Application conditions:
- Age up to 40 years
- Registration and writing of a dramatic text in Croatian
- At least one written dramatic text
- Willingness to actively work and consult with mentor Ivor Martinić in the period of 15 May to 15 July 2023 year, and from 1 September to 1 October 2023 years
- Participation in the intensive workshop with Ivana Vuković and Lucia Klarić in October 2023. in the KunstTeatr
- Arrival at the round table that will be held in the KunstCaffe
- Openness to work with the director and actors for the purposes of the stage reading of the text in the KunstTeatr in the second year of the project
The application should contain:
- a) Motivational letter (max. 2 cards of text)
- b) CV of the author
- c) Synopsis for the drama or working version of the text

The results of the competition are decided by a four-member jury consisting of: playwright and chief mentor Ivor Martinić, president of the Croatian Center for ITI Željka Turčinović, playwright and vice-president of SPID Jelena Kovačić and theater producer and co-founder of KunstTeatra Romana Brajša .

Candidates will be notified of the results in writing by May 15, 2023.

ABOUT MENTORS
Ivor Martinić was born in Split in 1984. years. He graduated in dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. Since 2005 works as a dramaturg on productions at the Dubrava Children’s Theatre, Mala Scena Theatre, ITD Theater, ZKM-U, and at Eurokaz and Rijeka Summer Nights. He often collaborates with Croatian Radio, in whose drama program almost all of his plays are performed. He writes plays, radio dramas and screenplays. For the drama Here is the title of the drama about Anti, it won the Fabrique et Croatie award of the REZ society and the Mali Marulić award at the Croatian Children’s Drama Festival. The drama was premiered at the City Youth Theater in Split, directed by Ivica Šimić, in May 2009. years. The same drama was staged in London, Brussels and Belgrade. The drama about Mirjana and those around her was premiered at the Yugoslav Drama Theater in February 2010. years. In the same year, it was staged in the Municipal Theater of Ljubljana directed by Dušan Jovanović and the Croatian National Theater directed by Anja Maksić Japundžić. The drama My son only walks a little more slowly was premiered at the Zagreb Youth Theater in 2011. directed by Janusz Kica. For this drama, he won numerous awards, such as the Golden Laurel Wreath, Lettuce, Golden Laughter and the Croatian Actor’s Award. With the successful premiere of this drama in Buenos Aires as part of the International Festival of Drama Europe + America 2014. his breakthrough into the Spanish-speaking area begins. The drama was soon premiered in Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil… The drama I’m afraid we know each other was premiered in 2014. year, and was created as a result of the collaboration of artists from the Gavella theater and the theater company Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, and as part of the international project The Art of Aging. The dramatic text was staged in both theaters, with a German and Croatian cast. In 2015 the text When the Child was a Child was premiered based on the film Nebo nad Berlin by Wim Wenders, produced by the Municipal Theater of Ljubljana. His drama It’s good while we die in order was premiered in 2019. directed by Aleksandar Švabić and produced by the Zagreb Youth Theater. In the same year, the drama It would be a shame if the plants grew was premiered in the co-production of Teatrum, T25 and KunstTeatr. His plays have been translated into twenty languages and he is the winner of a number of awards.
Ivana Vuković, MA in dramaturgy and graduate student in comparative literature, was born in 1992. in Split. She writes for theater, film and television, collaborates as an author and dramaturg on film and theater projects. He works on the productions of KunstTeatr, Kufer, ZKM, Montažstroj, HNK Split, KMD Dubrovnik, GKL Split, PlayDrama. In 2019 she was awarded the Third Prize “Marin Držić” for the text “55 Squares”. He received the Mali Marulić 2020 award for the dramatization of the novel “Lie, Melita”. year, and in 2021. for “Miša u toću” the Mira Muhoberac award for the original dramatic text. The plays on which she worked as a dramaturg and as the author of the text were shown at festivals such as MOT, BITEF, Dubrovnik Summer Festival, and were awarded at the festivals Days of Satire, Naj, naj festival, Mali Marulić, and the Croatian Theater Award. Her dramas were also performed as radio dramas in the drama program of the Croatian Radio. Proud member of SPID.
Lucija Klarić graduated with an MA study in dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. In addition to his studies, he also attended two Erasmus internships in the UK, where he worked at the Royal Exchange, Manchester and the Bush Theater, London. As a playwright, her plays are read at ADU, as part of the Day of the Youth Branch of HDDU and the “6 actresses looking for authors” initiative. For the text “The Road to Oblivion” in 2015. receives special recognition from the jury for the “Marin Držić” award. She is a resident of the Odyssey program in 2021 and for “Elida’s galactic journey” which she develops in La Chartreuse, Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, she receives the 1st prize “Little Marulić”. He writes scripts for children’s series: “Misi Mesi”, which is being developed with the help of HAVC support for a TV script (2017), and “Slonko”, produced by HRT (2020). She works as an author and dramaturg on the independent theater scene, leads drama workshops, writes reviews, and her great love is (video) games, and in her work she deals with the interdisciplinary field between gaming, drama and theater.
